Work begins to improve Southampton Outdoor Sports Center
THE FIRST phase of work to transform a sports facility in Southampton began this week.
After a 12-week consultation with businesses and residents and approval last month, work to improve the Southampton Outdoor Sports Center has now begun.
Opened in 1938, the Bassett site is currently undergoing work to improve its bike park and Woodland trail.
This first phase focuses on road resurfacing and reprofiling and is expected to be completed in early summer.

The park will be closed during construction and the Woodland Trail will be fenced in places but will remain open to the public.
The council’s finance boss, Cllr John Hannides, said the multimillion-pound improvement plan is an “ambitious and impressive undertaking”.
“It’s great that we have taken another step forward with the start of phase 1.”
The rest of the outdoor sports center remains open as usual.
“The overall improvements to the outdoor sports center will not only enhance this unique site, but provide greater opportunities for people to improve their health and well-being and promote participation in physical activity and sports” , added Cllr Hannides.
“These changes will also support our new, well-established local sports clubs and their community initiatives, while providing recreational users with an enhanced environment to enjoy with family and friends.
“This project contributes to the city’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2025 and will significantly improve the suitability of the outdoor sports center to host and accommodate a variety of city-wide and regional sporting events” .
