The best outdoor furniture trends for 2022 according to the experts
When it comes to making your garden your dream destination, the possibilities of creating something beautiful and unique for your home are endless! Sometimes it can be difficult to determine which is the best outdoor furniture with so many trends, from the best rocking chairs for lounging to durable outdoor rugs that are built to last. So to make your shopping spree easier, we talked to designers and experts from Wayfair to help identify the main emerging outdoor trends! From relaxed rib to striped cabin, these trends showcase classic design elements in a fresh and inspired way.
Rebecca Breslin, Senior Design Manager at Wayfair Professional, says “When planning your outdoor space for the warmer months, start with pieces that define the area you’ll be using – think mosaic floor tiles, a pergola or outdoor rugs. For continuity in your home, bring the design aesthetic from the interior to your outdoor space.
5 tips for designing your outdoor space
1. Locate the grounding and space-defining parts.
“If your outdoor space is larger, plan to divide the space with a few of these moments – a rug under a dining table, tiles for your seating area, and more.”
2. Continue your interior aesthetic outward.
“Do you prefer modern, rustic, farmhouse or traditional? It’s easy to find outdoor styles that coordinate with your overall aesthetic and it helps keep the outdoors connected to the rest of the house.
3. Maximize space for end use.
“If you’re working in a limited space, like a small patio or balcony, plan how you plan to use it. Want a cozy corner in the sun, a small dining table to receive your friends or simply a garden bed? Plan your space around your outdoor activity, to make the most of the space while you can.
4. Durability is key.
“Outdoor furniture will face the elements of spring and summer (and possibly fall). If your space is not covered, consider that sun and rain will have an impact on what you buy.Consider weather-resistant materials in key places like Sunbrella cushions for your outdoor set or Polywood for Adirondack chairs.
5. Raise the space.
“Look for a few raised items you really love to bring newness and excitement to your design, from tiles to sconces, dining sets, and more.”
Here’s everything you need to know about buying outdoor furniture for 2022.
“The newest product of the 70s revival, mesh accents are back with a twist. Metal cutouts and intricately woven rattan add texture to sleek silhouettes, giving this retro design element a modern touch,” says Wayfair professional stylist Brynna Lee. Lee suggests looking for furniture with perforated patterns, muted colors, rope and rattan, open weaves, and sculptural silhouettes.
Lee shares, “Floral patterns remain relevant in exterior design. This time around, we’re seeing a more stylized approach, a vibrant and striking homage to nature. Play with bright colors, floral textiles, unique accent chairs and painted ceramics to bring this fun trend to your garden.
For Wayfair’s professional stylist, Hayley Drew, the best way to achieve this airy style is to choose wicker furniture, liven up neutral color palettes with pops of greenery and look for light woods. “This year we welcome a more elevated version of the classic coastal style. Organic materials pair with crisp whites and tranquil sea glass hues for an effortless ocean-inspired look.
A trip to Sonoma
“From flower-draped pergolas to rustic mosaic tiles, this laid-back yet refined look borrows from the best that wine country has to offer,” continues Drew. This trend is a host’s dream, spotlighting elongated dining tables, pergolas, mosaic tiles, and warm-toned woods mixed with touches of wrought iron. Your garden will look like a weekend well spent in California!
If your outdoor layout is all about your amazing pool, this style will bring bright colors, pool loungers (performance-approved), and oversized umbrellas. “The timeless summer staple is making a bold comeback. From classic navy to sunny yellow, cabana stripes brighten up furniture, curtains, tiles and more,” says Cojo Barnes, professional stylist at Wayfair.
West coast casual
If you’re looking for an outdoor space that offers a laid-back yet fashion-forward vibe, this trend is a California dream. “Layers of muted tones, textures and lived-in fabrics speak to this California-inspired look. Pair organic materials like washed oak and stone with understated silhouettes for a clean, effortless setup,” says Lee.
