Nightly outdoor activities for the family

Family nights are one of the best ways to spend quality time and connect with each other. Instead of the usual Sunday dinners and movie nights, why not try some fun outside? Nowadays, it is safer to go out at night because there are fewer people and therefore less virus transmission. Just make sure to stick together as a group and maintain security.

Strengthen your bonds and learn something new with these family night out ideas:

Go fishing at night

Night fishing is an exciting activity for the whole family as many species of fish appear at night. It’s a fun way to teach kids about different species of fish and how the food chain works. You don’t need expensive equipment or a boat, just go to a nearby lake or pond and bring basic fishing gear like lures, rods, extra line, and sinkers.

If you are just starting out, bring durable gear such as Triumph spinning rods to ensure a firm grip and less slippage, perfect for catching trout. Also, make sure you have an emergency kit with you, such as extra flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and blankets. Wear good fishing shoes and make sure everyone has flotation devices.

Plan a night of backyard camping

Enjoy night camping with the whole family without straying too far from home. Simply set up a large tent, line it with layers of sleeping bags or yoga mats, and then have fun sleeping under the stars. Make it more magical for the kids by adding string lights which will light up the tent and add a soft glow.

The campsite wouldn’t be complete without food, especially the classic s’mores. Make it more exciting by having the kids help prepare meals. You can make simple camping recipes like pizza, vegetarian foil pouches, and grilled apples.

Make the most of your time outdoors by doing fun activities like stargazing. Create background stories to start a conversation, or turn it into an astronomy lesson by identifying and drawing constellations. Use your telescope to see better or create your own constellation viewer using a cardboard tube.

Host an outdoor cinema event

Outdoor movie nights are more than just watching a movie. They are a great way to bond with family and create memorable experiences. Just make yourself comfortable, pick a good movie, and enjoy great food for the perfect family home evening. Follow these steps to set up a DIY backyard movie theater:

  1. Choose your location: You can mount a portable sheet or screen against a wall or in your front yard. If you don’t have enough yard space, try it against your garage door or in the driveway.
  2. Set up the audio system and projector: Choose portable speakers that can fill the area with great sound. Make sure you don’t detonate it too hard and watch the crowd control. You can project the film on a regular bed sheet or on a smooth wall, as cracks or dents can affect the quality of the film.
  3. Create Comfortable Cinema Seating: Use folding camping chairs or ottomans to make everyone feel relaxed. Use insect repellents or citronella candles to keep mosquitoes and other bugs away.

Catch fireflies

It’s so much fun watching fireflies light up at night, so we often catch them to admire them up close. It’s a great activity to do with the whole family; don’t forget to let them fly away before bed.

They are easy to spot in the yard, just look for tiny flashing lights. They are usually found near low trees or vegetable gardens. To catch one, turn off the lights in your house outside, then grab a flashlight. Shine it up and down to attract them and when you get close enough use a net to catch them and place them in a jar with a pierced lid.

Let them go at night to avoid predators. Do not keep them for more than a day, as they may die. Firefly populations are now in decline due to habitat destruction and light pollution. Carefully grab them and release them back into the wild to protect these creatures.

Go for a walk in nature

A nature walk is a great way to let your family appreciate the surroundings. Kids these days spend most of their time indoors texting, playing video games, or watching TV. Going for a walk at night is good for their health and allows them to learn more about nature.

Bring essentials like food, water, a flashlight, and bug spray. To make your trip rewarding, be present and encourage possible sensory feedback. Be careful and make sure to stay away from areas where wildlife may roam.

Family evenings are a great time to take time out with the whole gang. They make great memories, decrease rivalries and develop greater happiness. These activities will make you appreciate not only the precious time spent together, but also the wonders of nature.
