Backyard Beer Garden will bring craft drinks and giant outdoor games to Chelsea

CHELSEA, MI — For one day only, those interested can sip Michigan craft drinks while playing a variety of backyard games from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 1.

This year’s Backyard Beer Garden event in Chelsea will feature around 20 games, including giant beer pong, giant flip cup, cornhole, giant Yahtzee, giant ring toss, football pool and more, spread in Palmer Commons, 304 S. Main St.

“Chelsea is all about community and community events, so we try to make it a very family-friendly event,” said Denise Cugliari, Events Coordinator for the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber launched the event in 2019 and typically sees nearly 1,000 people throughout the day, Cugliari said. It’s like “one last big hurray to Chelsea” as the summer draws to a close, she said.

Admission is $5 per person, cash only. Once someone purchases a wristband, they can enter and exit the event as they please.

The games will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, where participants will work together to decide who goes next. In addition to backyard games, the event will have around 20 picnic tables with playing cards.

Backyard Beer Garden also features Michigan craft beers, seltzers, cocktails and wines available for purchase, a DJ, and food from restaurants like Thompson’s Pizza, Smokehouse 52 BBQ, The Lakehouse Bakery and more.

This year’s event has more than 25 businesses sponsoring it with its games, food and music, Cugliari said, saying the chamber couldn’t do it without the “incredible support” of local businesses.

“It just goes to show that the businesses in the Chelsea community really appreciate not only what the Chamber does, but they also appreciate the Chelsea community hosting family (and) unique events,” she said.
